January 26, 2017  -  Statement on Recent Grass Island Shack Vandalization

On a recent visit to the Grass Island Shack, it was found that the structure had been vandalized. Several original flooring boards inside had been physically broken (most likely kicked out) and were missing in an attempt to gain access to the closed off second floor. After all of the hard work, time, and money that went into the recent rebuild, it is extremely disheartening and disappointing to see that someone would come along and go out of their way to destroy the property. This incident has been reported to the Guilford Police Department, Parks and Recreation Department, Facilities Department, and the Selectman’s Office who all will be looking into the issue and how it can be avoided going forward. The original purpose of rebuilding the Grass Island Shack was to make the structure safe and a place for people to enjoy. Remember, Grass Island is a town park. Unfortunately, it has not been two full months since the rebuild concluded and we will already need to make sizeable repairs.
